Getting well.

I recently went to check on my two koi and local redcap both in separate quarantine tanks.

The redcap that went in two weeks ago was treated for fin rot following an incident in the tank. The treatment with a malachite green solution worked and the fin rot went away, but the dosage was too harsh on her eyes, and she subsequently got cloudy eyes.

Upon reduction of the malachite dose by 50%, and running a pre-cycled air-powered filter she has gotten better over the last 1 and a 1/2 weeks. She no longer as cloudy eyes, or fin rot, and her health has returned to normal.

Meanwhile, two of my koi are in a aerated tank of malachite for treatment of Lymphocystis (ttp://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/diseases.htm). I believe one of them is a deformed koi, having never grown large for the past 2 years ... I might be onto something here lol...the breeding of microkoi!

Leaves are still falling!!!

Hi all!

Well the days are even colder, and there was frost upon the grass this morning and the day before.

I can't even imagine how cold it must be for my wetpets. They seem to be doing alright. For most of them it is now their second time out their in the pond in Winter.

I have to keep on cleaning the leaves out.

Tomorrow I am considering removal of the activated carbon in the external canister filter used on the indoor aquarium and replacing that chemical media with established colonies of biomedia from one of the two trickle towers.

The aim is the have a complete biological filtration system, instead of one that also relies on chemical filtration means.

Feeding frenzy!

Nothing interesting today in the world of fish!

I was out there scooping the fallen leaves. Luckily I already had a net in place. So far I've managed to scoop up a 10 litre bucket of leaves. Its ridiculous!

After that I feed all of my fish. Most as usual were quite happy to munch ASAP as I placed the food into the water.

I'm having thoughts of replacing the activated carbon on Saturday. Some readings some they become ineffective after a few weeks or months and takes away the food the nitrifying bugs try to consume to clean the water.

Winter's chill

Here I am again, and there are my fishes all outside in the freezing depth of winter.

In most parts of Australia our winters aren't so severe as to freeze the pond into a hugh icicle. I just went out to feed them. It's their only meal for today and they were glad to have seen me feed them.

I can't wait for the warmer months to come by, so that I may enjoy their company once again!

Another Winter's day, another day of hibernation for all my fish.

One of my fantail goldfish is currently in quarantine after an incident in the 4 foot tank. She (I'm sure its a she as she hasn't got any tubercules) got fin rot after the incident, and later developed one cloudy eye. She is recovering slowly, but well.

Meanwhile I feed them daily, but not as much as I did during the warmer months of the year. Around the same time I continue to scoop up all the leaves from the trees.

3 more months until the goldfish spawn. That day I can't wait for. The koi usually spawn later off in the year. Thank goodness or else I could never contend trying to raise that many fish!

The sun is finally setting and temperature continues to plummet.

The tank reads 12 degrees celsius on the thermometer. Cold days ahead for my wetpets
